A small collection of papers of Samuel Williams of Cambridge, Mass. related to his role as an agent for Mass. appointed to settle the boundary line between that state and New York in 1787. The papers include Williams' journal of the proceedings of agents appointed to ascertain the line of jurisdiction kept from 2 July - 6 Sep. 1787; the journal also contains copies of a few letters. Also included are extracts of records from Conn. regarding the boundary between that state and New York, 1731-34; a few astronomical observations to determine latitude (1772); Gerard Bancker's 1773 field book of his survey of the area; a volume with copies of previous agreements, [1784]; and misc. correspondence.

Samuel Williams (1743-1817) was the son of Rev. Warham Williams (1699-1751) of Waltham, Mass. In 1761 he graduated from Harvard College and became minister of Bradford, Mass., until 1779 when he was chosen professor of philosophy at Harvard. Williams was a member of the American Philosophical Society, helped organize the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and served on various state commissions.
